Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion: 8 Ways #WAP Whopped Record Books

Published: Thursday 20th Aug 2020 by Rashad

Undoubtedly expected to make a splash upon its premiere on the Billboard Hot 100, the gargantuan impact made by Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion‘s joint effort, ‘WAP,’ may be better categorized as a tsunami.

Opening atop the tally with numbers that rival some of music history’s biggest debuts ever, the Ayo the Producer-crafted bop – which largely samples Frank Ski‘s 1992 club anthem ‘Whores in This House’ – was penciled in record books several times over in just its first seven days.

Look inside to see 8 ways ‘WAP’ whopped history:

In the four months since we published an ode to the only songs to debut at #1 on the Hot 100 (click here to read), that list had expanded by five with Travis Scott & Kid Cudi‘s ‘The Scotts,’ Bieber and Grande’s ‘Stuck With U,’ ‘Taylor Swift‘s ‘Cardigan,’ Grande and Lady Gaga‘s ‘Rain On Me,’ and 6ix9ine and Nicki Minaj‘s ‘Trollz’ joining the exclusive club.

Now, ‘WAP’ – the 42nd song in history to debut at #1 – joins the ranking as the sixth since that publication and seventh in the overall count of tunes to premiere at the chart’s apex position.

Look below for 8 other record-setting stats attributed to the raunchy tune.

  1. First female rapper to net 4 #1 hits on the Hot 100 [Cardi]
    • Cardi B first saw her name atop the Hot 100 in October 2017 when her history-making debut single, ‘Bodak Yellow,’ was colored in the tally’s peak.  In less than three years since, she’s amassed three additional chart-toppers – a record among female rappers.  Among all women, Ariana Grande is the only other act to debut in the 2010’s and collect as many chart-toppers faster.
  2. First female rapper to net a #1 hit in two different decades [Cardi]
    • Three of B’s chart-topping hits – ‘Girls Like You,’ ‘I Like It,’ and ‘Bodak Yellow,’ – were gathered before the clock struck 12am on January 1, 2020.  As such, ‘WAP’ – her fourth and most recent chart leader – was collected in a new decade making her the first and only female rapper to boast such a win.
  3. First female rappers to debut at #1 with an all-female collaboration [Cardi & Meg]
    • Of the nine all-female collaborations that have occupied the Hot 100’s #1 spot over Billboard’s 62-year history, only two of them debuted there:  Lady Gaga & Ariana Grande’s ‘Rain on Me’ (2020) and ‘WAP’ (2020).  This distinction is not to be confused with Doja Cat and Nicki Minaj who may be credited with taking their joint Rap hit, ‘Say So (Remix)’ to the top but did not open in the position.

  4. Best first-week streaming figures for any song EVER [Cardi & Meg]
    • With 93 million total streams amassed in its inaugural week, ‘WAP’ is listed in history books for having the best streaming debut of any song (regardless of genre or gender).  It snatches the title from Grande’s 2019 hit, ‘7 Rings,’ which hit #1 thanks to a whopping 85 million first-week streams.  When ALL weeks are considered, Grande does retain the record for greatest streaming week ever among female acts thanks to her megahit, 2018’s ‘thank u next,’ nabbing 93.8 million in its fifth week of availability while Lil Nas X‘s ‘Old Town Road‘ holds the overall record when his song garnered 143 million streams in one week.
  5. Greatest on-demand streaming week for any female act EVER [Cardi & Meg]
    • Speaking of Ariana, she also previously held the record among women for most on-demand streams (not to be confused with TOTAL streaming) thanks to ‘7 Rings.’  However, that record was shattered when ‘WAP’ amassed a whopping 54.7 million streams last week.
  6. Most 24-hour views for an all-female collaboration in YouTube history [Cardi B & Meg]
    • As we reported here, no other all-female collaboration (regardless of genre) had drawn over 26 million views in its first 24 hours before ‘WAP.’
  7. First female rapper to nab two #1 hits ahead of her official debut album [Meg]
    • As of time reported, only three female rappers have topped the Hot 100 more than once:  Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion.  Unlike her forerunners, Stallion is the only to have run the ranking ahead of her official debut album.
  8. Newest Female Rapper to collect a top 10 hit in two different decades [Cardi B]
    • With the #1 debut of ‘WAP,’ Cardi joins an elite list of femcees who can boast having top 10 hits in two different decades.  The first was Lil Kim, followed by Missy Elliott, Eve, and later Minaj.

*****

The achievements above are just a few of the noteworthy nabbed by ‘WAP.’

Elsewhere, the song garnered the highest first-week sales of the year, is among the fastest ever certified by the RIAA (as we reported here), extended 2020’s record for most Hot 100 #1 debuts, extended 2020’s record for most chart-topping duets in one year, and much more.

Lmao chile let’s talk about it 😂 I’m from an era where we were used to seeing artists DISAPPEAR 🤣 Some would take a break, others would never come back, and they were better for it lol…I’m getting pure TIRED of artists with obviously NOTHING to give getting chances and lives like a cat 🐱…Cammy needs to take a LONG break and if she never comes back that’s fine 😂 At least she’s has Havana na na and Shawnorita lol…these artists BEEN getting long in the tooth and/or messing up their legacies and catalogs with uninspired MESS…you were lucky to make it to album #2 back in the day 💯 The good sis Rihanna took a much needed BREAK break…Adele moves just like an 80’s/90’s superstar artist…come out, sell records and then BYE for at least 3 years if not more…Cammy already teasing future flops and her album isn’t even a year old 🤣 Her album dropped December 2019 lmao….The Weeknd dropped Heartless and Blinding Lights November 2019 and is STILL actively promoting them like you’re supposed to 😂 Dua dropped Don’t Start Now October 2019 lol 🤳🏽

The way megan bounced back and now has 2 number 1’s while normani is nowhere to be found in the music industry

I told yall, remember that rolling stone magazine cover that megan, normani and sza appeared on together , at the beginning of the year I told yall, in the next few years we would look at that rolling stone magazine cover and ask ourselves

“who is that girl standing next to megan and sza” “she really fell of did she” ” I thought yall said she was the new beyonce ”

    😭😭😭

  6. AJ August 20, 2020

Rashad really TRIED and did too much with that headline

  7. Jay August 20, 2020

I don’t see why they won’t just close the old record books, they are two totally different scoring models, all of these new hits are from majority streaming whereas back in the days artist were number one based on mainly airplay. Just let the older artist be great and keep their records and open a new set of charts for the New Age music.

    • Dc August 20, 2020

But the pure sales were 125,000 biggest of year this single is a monster

    • Misty Knight August 21, 2020

Exactly, if Madonna or Michael Jackson had the digital/streaming game in their prime, every track from their albums would go top 20. All this Drake has the most Hot 100 entries is BULL. It’s a totally different game. And constantly releasing updated albums and new remixes to poke the charts is unfair to the artists of yesterday who had to relay on people leaving their homes to purchase just one copy of a single or album, not 15 different variations.

    this is what’s breaking records?

Two whhores bragging about their p**** game..

Cardi b should be the last person on earth, who shouldn’t be bragging about her p****.

    • Girl… August 21, 2020

Nicki is the same woman who wrote “Slumber Party” and “Anaconda”. Only difference is Anaconda was CLOSE to #1. Chill out.

  9. Spread legs 🦵 like C@r@na August 21, 2020

Cardi B is a beast!!!! Megan is just a substitute… she got lucky to have 2 #1 hits coz of Queen B & Cardi B.

    • Minajé August 21, 2020

Meg sucks. She raps like a r***** and has no versatility. Is she even a real woman? She gives me t***** vibes.

Honestly our young black kids need better music and examples. The song knocks but we have to emerge to a higher consciousness as a black culture. Black woman beind depucted as h*** and fetishized is what this is perpetuating.
